Congested Skin
Clogged pores are one of the most common skin concerns and can appear in many different forms, including milia, whiteheads, blackheads, and enlarged pores. While often harmless, they can make the skin look uneven, textured, or congested, and may lead to breakouts if not properly managed.
Pores become clogged when excess oil, dead skin cells, or debris build up on the surface of the skin. This blockage can harden inside the pore, trapping sebum and sometimes bacteria, which causes spots or bumps. Factors such as hormones, skincare products, makeup, sun exposure, and even genetics can all play a role in pore congestion.
Although clogged pores are not usually a medical concern, many people choose to treat them for cosmetic reasons, to prevent acne, and to keep their skin looking smoother and clearer.
Common types of congestion

Milia
Milia are small, white, hard bumps that develop when keratin becomes trapped beneath the skin’s surface.
Whiteheads
Whiteheads are closed comedones that appear as small, white or flesh-coloured bumps when pores are blocked but remain sealed.
Blackheads
Blackheads are open comedones where trapped oil and debris are exposed to air, causing them to oxidise and turn dark on the surface.
Enlarged pores
Enlarged pores are usually the result of excess oil production, a buildup of dead skin cells, or a loss of elasticity with age, which makes pores more visible.
Treatment Options:
Congested skin can present as blackheads, whiteheads, milia, enlarged pores or an uneven, bumpy texture. The most suitable treatment will depend on the type and severity of the congestion, as well as your skin type and any accompanying concerns.

-
Microdermabrasion – A deep exfoliating treatment that removes accumulated dead skin cells and surface debris, helping to clear clogged pores and leave the complexion smoother, brighter and more refined. It is also an excellent maintenance treatment for skin that regularly becomes congested. Best for: blackheads, whiteheads, enlarged pores, rough texture and general congestion.
-
Chemical Peels – Professional chemical peels help dissolve the excess oil, debris and dead skin cells that can block pores. Each peel is selected according to your skin type and concerns, helping to improve clarity, refine texture and reduce recurring congestion. Best for: persistent congestion, excess oil, blackheads, whiteheads, visible pores and breakout-prone skin.
-
PRX-T33 No-Peel Peel – A needle-free biorevitalisation treatment that supports skin renewal and helps improve texture, tone and radiance without visible peeling. PRX-T33 can complement treatments that directly clear congestion, although Microdermabrasion and Chemical Peels are generally more suitable for blocked pores, blackheads and whiteheads. Best for: congested skin accompanied by dullness, uneven texture, reduced skin quality or post-breakout pigmentation.
-
Milia Extraction – A precise extraction treatment used to safely remove suitable milia from beneath the skin’s surface. Milia Extraction can be added to a Microdermabrasion treatment where appropriate. Best for: individual, stubborn milia that cannot be cleared through exfoliation alone.
A consultation allows us to identify the type and possible cause of your congestion before recommending the most appropriate treatment. A personalised home skincare routine may also be advised to help maintain clearer skin and reduce the likelihood of congestion returning.
